"Discovering Careers in Earth Science," the theme of Earth Science Week 2012, will boost awareness about the geosciences and the many exciting career and job opportunities in the field. The objectives are to engage all people in discovering the Earth sciences, to remind people that Earth science is all around us, to encourage Earth stewardship through understanding, to motivate geoscientists to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about the Earth.  

National Fossil Day, Thursday October 18, 2012:

9:00 am Paleontology hike. Short easy hike. 45 minutes.

12:00-5:00 pm Paleontology in Capitol Reef. Numerous activities at Ripple Rock Nature Center, including a mock fossil dig, making fossil molds and a talk. 

Geology Programs, Friday October 19, 2012:

9:00 am Geology hike for adults. Moderate hike to viewpoint on Cohab trail. 1.5 hours.

9:00 am Geology hike for kids. Moderate hike to Hickman Bridge. 1.5 hours.

12:00-5:00 pm Geology of Capitol Reef. Numerous activities at Ripple Rock Nature Center including creating your own sedimentary rocks, rock displays and a talk.

Archeology Programs, Saturday, October 20, 2012:

9:00-11:00 am Atlatl Demonstration at the picnic area.

12:00-5:00 pm Fremont Fun! Numerous activities at Ripple Rock Nature Center including making clay figurines and learning about Fremont Culture.
