THURSDAY – 1ST, 15TH, 22ND& 29TH 10:00 AM “TURTLE MOUND WALK” - We will gather at the Turtle Mound parking area to discuss one of the largest shell middens in the nation and what life was like for the people who called this place home for thousands of years. We will review how the mounds of the area were used and walk to the top of the mound. (30 min.)
FRIDAY 16TH, 23RD and 30TH – 10:00 AM “ELDORA TALK” - Join a ranger at the Eldora dock. Talk about life on Mosquito Lagoon during the Eldora era. Explore the Eldora home after. (30 minutes)
SATURDAY 3RD, 17TH AND 24TH - 2:00 PM - “YOUNG SOUND SEEKERS DOCUMENTARY” - View the Postcards from Canaveral documentary. This film was funded by a grant from the National Park Service to Atlantic Center for the Arts, in collaboration with community partners Conklin Davis Center for the Visually Impaired and Stetson University. Meet at the Apollo Visitor Center. (25 minutes)
TUESDAY 6TH AND 20TH - “CANOE MOSQUITO LAGOON” - 9:30 AM – Arrive by 9:15 AM. Reservations will be accepted a week before the canoe date. Join a guide as you explore this rich and diverse estuary up close. Some experience is preferred. You must be at least 8 years old and able to paddle. You must wear completely enclosed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Dress to get wet. There is a $25 canoe rental fee. You can bring your own canoe/kayak. WEDNESDAY 7TH, 14TH, 21ST AND 28TH – 10:00 AM - “PLANT WALKS” - Join us every Wednesday for a walk to identify the plants of Canaveral National Seashore and find out how they have been utilized over the years. Each walk is led by an experienced volunteer and covers a different part of the park. Please bring water for hydration and wear shoes for trail walking. (2 hours).
The walks in October will be as follows:
1. Oct. 7TH- Turtle Mound Historic Site. Meet at 10:00 am at the Turtle Mound parking lot.
2. Oct. 14TH - Eldora. Meet at 10:00 am at parking lot number 7.
3. Oct. 21ST - Hammock Loop Trail. Meet at 10:00 am at parking lot number 8.
4. Oct. 28TH – Castle Windy Trail. Meet at 10:00 am at beach parking lot number 3.
SUNDAY 11TH and 25TH - 9:15 AM- “MANATEE 101” – Observe manatee in their natural environment and learn about their unique characteristics from a park ranger. Meet at the Visitor Center Pavilion in the Apollo District at 9:15 AM. (30 minutes)
MONDAY 12TH - 10:00 AM “ENDANGERED SPECIES” - Learn about the endangered animals who call Canaveral National Seashore home. The diversity includes mice, birds, reptiles, and aquatic mammals. Explore why this barrier island is vital to their survival and how you can help. Meet at the Apollo Visitor Center. (1 hour)
SATURDAY, 17TH - 9:00 AM – “SEASHORE CLEANUP”-Help keep our seashore trash free. Pick up supplies at the Apollo Visitor Center and explore the park while volunteering. Learn about park safe cleanup procedures. Sign up to volunteer! End your cleanup when you see fit.(2 hours)
TUESDAY 27TH - 9:00 AM - “SEASHORE CLEANUP STROLL” - Join park staff for a guided walk through the unique ecosystems of the seashore while helping to keep our beaches clean. As we explore up to a mile of shoreline, visitors will learn about the coastal environment and assist with a light beach cleanup along the way. Trash bags are provided. Please bring a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and water in a reusable container. Meet at the Apollo Visitor Center. (30 minutes)
