Apollo District Environmental Education

Education Programs Offered-

In-person programs are available October, November and January through April each school year. Environmental Education Programs in the Apollo District can be held Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday from 10:00-12:00. Alternate days may be appropriate if resources are available.

Details for all programs:

• Location: Apollo Beach, 7611 S. Atlantic Ave New Smyrna Beach FL, 32169.
• Maximum group size: 30 students
• Teachers & Chaperones: 1 adult per 10 students (not to exceed 45 total)

Programs offered in the Apollo District:

Turtle Mound

• 4th – 5th Grade
• Students participate in a mock archeological dig and find artifacts that have been found in the area. They will explore the 35-foot-high ancient shell mound the Timucuan people built over 2,000 years.

Lagoon Experience

• 4th – 5th Grade
• Students work in small groups with an adult chaperone using a seine net to capture animal species found in the Mosquito Lagoon. Captured animals are studied and identified and placed back in the lagoon.

Barrier Island Habitat

• 3rd – 5th Grade
• Students explore the barrier island ecosystem and the unique challenges its inhabitants overcome for survival. Explore the lagoon and beach habitats. Participate in a scavenger hunt on the beach.

Sea Turtles of the Seashore

• 4th – 5th Grade
• Students will simulate a sea turtle stranding recording the data and taking proper measurements of model sea turtles. This program can be done in the classroom or out in the park. They will learn about our nesting sea turtles and how Canaveral National Seashore protects them.

Other opportunities:

Service Learning

• Need volunteer hours? Conduct a beach cleanup with your class. Get the opportunity to give back to your community. Service learning is an option in the Apollo District.

Academic Fee Waiver

Visitors 16 years of age or older (including students, chaperones, and teachers) must pay an entrance fee at this site. Academic institutions (including schools) may apply for an academic fee waiver to cover the cost of these visitors. Certification

Academic fee waivers are not granted automatically. Applicant groups must show they qualify for the waiver. There are three criteria the group must meet to qualify for an academic fee waiver: eligibility, relevance of park resources or facilities to academic program, and academic purpose. Details of these qualifications are listed below. If your institution and purpose meet these criteria, submit this form.

Criterion One - Eligibility

Describe and/or attach current official recognition or accreditation as an educational institution by a federal, state, or local government or other documentation attesting to educational status, such as an accreditation letter, educational tax-exempt letter.

Authority: Public Law 114-289 National Park Service Centennial Act and 54 U.S.C. 100701 Protection, interpretation, and research in System.
