In general, the waterways of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail are open continuously year-round. Specific operating hours will vary based on your destination. Be sure to check the open hours of each site before visiting as our partner locations and access sites have varying hours. Some access points may be closed in winter months, and all access is dependent upon weather conditions.
To plan your next adventure on the Chesapeake see Places to Go and Things to Do for links to sites, information on operating hours and seasons, water trails and events in the Chesapeake Bay.
Our office headquarters at Historic Jamestowne is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except federal holidays. View our calendar for upcoming special events.
Important Notice: The Werowocomoco archeological site remains closed to the public as planning efforts are ongoing. Those looking to engage with American Indian history in Virginia have a number of other options. The Gloucester County Visitor Center recently worked with NPS to open an exhibit on Werowocomoco. Machicomoco State Park is dedicated to interpreting Virginia's indigenous history, and hosts an annual Indigenous Peoples Day event each autumn. Local tribes also host their own museums and public events, including Powwows.
