During the week of December 5th, 2016, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was descended by a vertical access inspection team. The team was managed by Project Historical Architect Rebecca Cybularz, of the National Park Service Historic Preservation Training Center of Frederick, Maryland. This inspection uses infrared photography and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to document the condition of the extant cracks in the lighthouse. These periodic inspections of America’s cultural resources allow the National Park Service to assess the condition of historic structures and anticipate repairs and rehabilitation.
