Seashore Updates
  • In case you hadn’t heard, on November 2, 2019, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, along with partner organizations, will celebrate the area’s surf fishing history at the 1st Cape Hatteras Surf Fishing Heritage Celebration. The free event will be held at the Fessenden Center in Buxton, North Carolina. More details can be found in our recent press release. Thank you to our partners: Outer Banks Forever, Cape Hatteras Anglers Club, North Carolina Beach Buggy Association, Outer Banks History Center, and Outer Banks Preservation Association.
  • The Seashore is celebrating Arts in the Park month with family-friendly events at the Bodie Island Lighthouse October 4-11. These drop in events are free and open to the public. Please see the full schedule on our Facebook page.
  • The North Carolina Ferry System announced a change in schedule for routes serving Ocracoke Island during the recovery from Hurricane Dorian. At this time, Hyde County is only allowing residents, non-resident property owners, and personnel authorized by Hyde County Emergency Management to access Ocracoke Island. All motorists and pedestrians boarding an Ocracoke-bound ferry must meet the re-entry criteria or be given prior approval by Hyde County.
  • A 75-year-old male from Downsville, New York died in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Hatteras National Seashore near Hatteras, NC on September 28. [Press Release].
  • Visitors can sign up for beach safety text messages by texting “Join OBXBeachConditions” to 30890.

Hatteras Island Interpretive Programs
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Move
  • Dates: Oct 5-Oct 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. (daily program)
  • Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center pavilion
  • Description: Learn about the monumental move event that happened in 1999 when the entire light station was moved 2,900 feet away from the threat of a changing shoreline.
Shaping the Barrier Islands
  • Dates: Oct 5-Oct 11 from 3:30 to 4 p.m., and Oct 7-Oct 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center pavilion
  • Description: Wars, wind, hurricanes, and ocean currents have all had impacts on the shores of Cape Hatteras. Join us to learn about some of these events and the changes they have made to the island.
Inclement weather may impact lighthouse climbs and other interpretive programming.

1st Cape Hatteras Surf Fishing Heritage Celebration - Special Event
  • Date: Nov 2 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Location: Fessenden Center, Buxton
  • Description: Cape Hatteras National Seashore, along with partner organizations, will celebrate the area’s strong surf fishing history at the 1st Cape Hatteras Surf Fishing Heritage Celebration. More details about this event will be posted on a special event web page and Facebook event page.
Learn to Fish Clinic
  • Date: Nov 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Location: Ramp 55 – next to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum
  • Description: The International Game Fish Association will host a free learn-to-fish clinic through its Passports to Fishing Program. Participants will learn basic fishing techniques and ethical angling practices. All fishing equipment will be provided. Fishing is catch-and-release-only. Families are encouraged to bring beach chairs, water, and sunscreen.
  • Volunteers Needed: We are looking for volunteers to help teach basic surf fishing techniques and ethical angling practices through the International Game Fish Association’s (IGFA) Learn-to-Fish clinic the morning of Saturday November 9. This is an all-day event and volunteers will be asked to assist and teach various stations. All equipment will be provided and IGFA will provide volunteers with training for each station. The clinic will be held near off-road vehicle Ramp 55 in Hatteras Village. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact Amiee Ginnever at 252-475-8306.
