Photos of the Week
The outside of the Ocracoke Lighthouse will be cleaned between November 13 and November 18 by Seres Engineering & Services LLC of Mount Pleasant, SC.
The solid white exterior coloration of the Ocracoke Lighthouse serves as its identifying mark to mariners by day. The original whitewash “recipe” called for blending lime, salt, spanish whiting, rice, glue, and boiling water. The mixture was applied while still hot.
Though the lighthouse is not open for climbing, the site can be visited daily.
View of the beach between off-road vehicle ramps 2 and 4 on Bodie Island this morning. The cliff that formed is creating hazardous conditions for beach driving and walking. Another area of concern is around ramp 25. The nasty weather approaching the Outer Banks may create additional hazardous beach and ocean conditions.
