Cape Hatteras Light stuck in fixed position.
Seashore Rangers responded to reports that the Cape Hatteras Light was stuck in a fixed position on the evening of August 25. The U.S. Coast Guard fixed the light the next day.

57 people attended Ocracoke Island’s first public sea turtle nest excavation of the summer on the morning of August 26.
 
Seashore Updates
  • A project to construct an accessible hunt blind and wildlife-viewing platform on Bodie Island began this week. [Press Release]

  • The webpage for the 1st Cape Hatteras Surf Fishing Heritage Celebration was updated to include an event program.

  • As of August 29 at 8 a.m., staff have found 467 sea turtle nests across the Seashore. The previous record for a single season was 325 nests.

  • For current beach access information, go to: http://go.nps.gov/beachaccess.

  • Visitors can sign up for beach safety text messages by texting “Join OBXBeachConditions” to 30890.

  • Dates: Sep 5 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sep 6 from 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

  • Description: The base of the Ocracoke Lighthouse will be open for viewing.

Hatteras Island Interpretive Programs/Activities
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Move

  • Dates: Aug 31-Sep 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. (daily program)

  • Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center pavilion

  • Description: Learn about the monumental move event that happened in 1999 when the entire light station was moved 2,900 feet away from the threat of a changing shoreline.

Shaping the Barrier Islands

  • Dates: Aug 31-Sep 2 from 3:30-4 p.m., and Sep 3-Sep 6 at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (daily program)

  • Location: Hatteras Island Visitor Center pavilion

  • Description: Wars, wind, hurricanes, and ocean currents have all had impacts on the shores of Cape Hatteras. Join us to learn about some of these events and the changes they have made to the island.

Fish with a Ranger (Buxton)

  • Date: Sep 2 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

  • Location: Buxton (call for specific location)

  • Description: We bring the poles, you bring the bait. Call 252-475-9622 to pre-register beginning the Saturday prior to the program.

Ocracoke Island Interpretive Programs/Activities
Barrier Island Nature

  • Dates: Sep 2 from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sep 6 from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  • Location: Ocracoke Visitor Center

  • Description: Join a park ranger for a talk about the wild side of the park. 

Pirates!

  • Dates: Sep 2 from 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Sep 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

  • Location: Ocracoke Visitor Center

  • Description: Learn about Blackbeard and others with a park ranger.

Ocracoke After Dark

  • Date: Sep 2 from 8:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

  • Location: Ocracoke Beach Access

  • Description: Bring blankets and chairs for stargazing on the beach! Bring bug spray.

Ocracoke History

  • Dates: Sep 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Sep 4 from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  • Location: Ocracoke Visitor Center

  • Description: Learn about the island’s rich past. 

Banker Ponies

  • Date: Sep 5 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

  • Location: Ocracoke Pony Pasture

  • Description: Meet the ponies unique to Ocracoke! Bring bug spray.

Inclement weather may impact lighthouse climbs and other interpretive programming.

Special Events
Day at the Docks

  • Dates: Sept 13-14

  • Location: Hatteras, NC

  • Description: Day at the Docks was started to celebrate the “Spirt of Hatteras” when the village recovered from Hurricane Isabel in 2003 as an intact community, anchored by the commercial and charter fishermen. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is one of the many sponsors of this outstanding annual event.

 

Beach Cleanups on Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke Islands

  • Date: Sept 21, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

1st Annual Surf Fishing Heritage Celebration - Special Event

  • Date: Nov 2

  • Location: Fessenden Center, Buxton

  • Description: Cape Hatteras National Seashore, along with partner organizations, will celebrate the area’s strong surf fishing history at the 1st annual Cape Hatteras Surf Fishing Heritage Celebration. More details about this event will be posted on a special event web page and Facebook event page.
