The spring Eastern Wild Turkey hunt will take place in Massachusetts starting April 29 and in Cape Cod National Seashore for a second season.The spring turkey hunt is a result of the Cape Cod National Seashore Hunting Program Environmental Impact Statement Record of Decision signed in September 2007.The national seashore is working towards increasing hunting opportunities for native upland game bird species while phasing out the release and hunting of ring-necked pheasant, a non-native species. The spring turkey hunt will be consistent with most of the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations.A national seashore turkey hunting permit will be required at no cost, in addition to the state hunting license and turkey stamp.The turkey hunting permits will be issued through a lottery system this year and each permit will be good for one week.Hunters must obtain a Massachusetts hunting license and turkey stamp prior to entering the national seashore turkey hunting permit lottery.The 2013 national seashore turkey hunting season will run the first three weeks of the State four-week turkey season, from April 29 through May 18. To enter the spring turkey hunt lottery, a turkey hunting permit application may be obtained on the Cape Cod National Seashore website at www.nps.gov/caco.Applications are also available Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM at Cape Cod National Seashore Headquarters, located at 99 Marconi Site Road, Wellfleet.Turkey hunting permit applications will need to be mailed in by March 29.The application includes all information needed to enter the spring turkey hunt lottery.
