Cape Cod National Seashore is offering a special program called "To the Race!" on March 14 at 10 AM. During this three-hour program, a ranger will lead a walk through the Hatches Harbor area to visit Race Point Light. Learn about salt marsh restoration and how climate change is affecting the area, and view the exterior of Race Point Light. Afterwards, hike over the dune to reach Race Point, named for its strong currents. In the spring an upwelling of plankton makes this a great location for watching whales. A large percentage of the endangered North Atlantic right whale population passes through Cape Cod waters during the species' spring migration. With luck, whales will be spotted during the walk. The hike involves walking three miles, some of which will be over loose sand. Bring water, sturdy shoes, bug spray, a snack, and binoculars (if you have them). Meet at 10 AM in the parking lot at Province Lands Visitor Center, 171 Race Point Rd., Provincetown, to caravan to the starting location. In the event of rain, an alternate date of March 21 at 2 PM has been set. If the weather looks questionable on March 14, call (508) 487-2100 x 0920 to see if the walk will take place or will be moved to March 21. |
