Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price is pleased to announce that that the Province Lands Visitor Center in Provincetown will remain open through October 31. Though federal budget cuts earlier in the year had threatened a complete closure of the visitor center for the 2013 season, a generous donation by Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore enabled the visitor center to operate with a reduced staff from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Over the summer, adjustments to park operations resulted in sufficient funds being available to keep the center open in September and October, which are traditionally very busy months. The center will be open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM through October 31, which is its typical closing date. Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham is open year 'round. Fall is a busy season at the national seashore. Visitors and park neighbors can enjoy the beaches at a quieter time, take part in ranger-guided walks to some of the less traveled areas of the park, harvest cranberries and mushrooms (check at visitor centers for limits), and enjoy clear views and crisp air.Old Harbor Life-Saving Station, located at Race Point Beach in Provincetown, often sees its highest visitation in the fall.Open houses are offered at Old Harbor from 2:00 to 4:00 PM daily through September, and on weekends, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in October. IF YOU GO: The Province Lands Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM through October 31. Staff members are available to answer questions, assist with planning activities, and provide hiking and bicycling trail information. The visitor center features exhibits on the Outer Cape's natural and cultural resources, orientation films, and a bookstore with interpretive items for sale, such as books, maps, games, apparel, and puzzles. The 360-degree rooftop observation deck provides views of the surrounding dunes and sea. A listing of all of the national seashore's programs is available at the two seashore visitor centers, or on-line at www.nps.gov/caco. ### |
