The book, Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants, by Douglas Tallamy, is the centerpiece of Eastham Public Library's One Book/One Town Series. Two events in the series will be held at Salt Pond Visitor Center Classroom, located at 50 Nauset Road, Eastham. The first program is titled "Bees, Glorious Bees!" and will be presented by Beekeeper Dan Smith of Pamet Bees on October 14 at 1 pm. Attendees will learn the life story of the honeybee, including a "who's who" of the hive, and details on the bustling activity of bee colonies as they pollinate our crops and make golden honey, bringing truth to the figure of speech "busy as a bee". The second program is titled "Adding Native Plants to Your Landscape" and will be presented by Theresa Sprague of Blue Flax Design, and Lindsay Strode of Cape Organics on October 15 at 10 am. This program is the "how to" follow-up to Bringing Nature Home. Attendees will learn how to use native plants in their yard to help improve wildlife habitat, while also providing for beauty and function.Tips will be provided for screening and improving unappealing views, for dealing with poor soils, drought, and shade, and for adding color and texture to landscaping.Theresa and Lindsay are both prominent landscape designers with practical guidance on how to connect a landscape with neighboring properties to collectively develop larger, undisturbed areas of habitat. They will also take a look at some of the native cultivars available in local Cape Cod nurseries, and discuss the value these "nativars" provide in our landscapes.
