National Seashore Rangers Hosting Nature and History Programs in April

WELLFLEET, Mass– Park rangers are offering a variety of programs in April. All programs are free, and most do not require reservations, except as noted. Sharks and Seals: Cape Cod’s Dynamic Duo Walk (Eastham)—Saturdays at 9 am, one hour, 1 mile in loose sand. Explore the relationship between sharks and seals and the roles they play in a healthy marine environment. Reservations required, up to one week in advance, by calling (508) 255-2431, ext. 0.

Crabs of the Cape—Saturdays at 2 pm, 30 minutes. This indoor illustrated program at the Salt Pond Visitor Center Auditorium explores how crabs have and continue to create change here.

Nauset Marsh Hike—Sundays at 11 am, two hours, 1.5 miles. Walk through Cape Cod’s geologic past. Explore how the Cape has been shaped by nature and people, and what may be in store for its future. Meet at Salt Pond Visitor Center. Cancelled in the event of heavy rain.

The Story of the Pirate Ship Whydah—Sundays, April 10 and 24 at 2 pm, 45 minutes, ¼-mile walk. Delve into the fascinating history of the famous pirate ship, Whydah, which wrecked here in 1717, and its captain, Black Sam Bellamy. Meet at the Marconi Station Site parking lot, off Route 6 in South Wellfleet. Cancelled in the event of heavy rain.

The Creation of Cape Cod National Seashore—Sundays, April 3 and 17, one hour. Learn why a 1961 editorial in the Berkshire Eagle of Pittsfield, MA called the establishment of Cape Cod National Seashore “the finest victory ever recorded for the cause of conservation in New England.” Indoor program at Salt Pond Visitor Center.

Plein Air Painting—Tuesday, April 12, 8:30-10:30 am, drop in. The Eastham Painter’s Guild kicks off its season of painting in the seashore. Look for them at the Three Sisters Lights in Eastham and bring your own art supplies if you wish to join them. Heavy rain cancels.

If You Go: Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at 50 Nauset Road, Eastham. The center is open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Rangers are on duty to assist with trip planning. The America’s National Parks store has seashore-related items for sale. Take in a park film (open captions and audio description available), tour the museum, and enjoy expansive views of Salt Pond, Nauset Marsh, and the Atlantic beyond. Large print and Braille versions of certain publications are available. The Buttonbush and Nauset Marsh walking trails and the Nauset Bicycle Trail are located nearby.
