WELLFLEET, Mass. – The national seashore has completed several construction projects throughout the park. The stairs at Marconi Beach in Wellfleet will be open to the public at noon on Friday, in time for the holiday weekend. The stairs were damaged by storms last fall, closing access to Marconi Beach through this spring.

The relocated Province Lands Road at Herring Cove Beach will also be open to traffic by 4 pm Friday. The construction of the new north parking lot at Herring Cove is in the final stages and will remain closed until striping, fencing, and final inspection are finished in the coming weeks. The road will be open. The lot as well as the new bike lane and the new restroom will remain closed.

“We are very pleased to open access to the new road ahead of schedule,” said Superintendent Brian Carlstrom. “We need a few more weeks to finish up the north parking lot at Herring Cove, but the south lot, fee booth, and bathhouse will be open for visitors on Friday. We need everyone’s assistance to complete this work in a timely manner.”

It is critical that walkers and bikers stay out of the construction area and the new plantings at Herring Cove North to allow the beachgrass to stabilize the area. Help is also needed to protect plovers, an endangered species, that have nested in the dune at Herring Cove North. A section of the beach north of the bathhouse is closed to pets, but visitors  may continue to walk leashed pets south of the bathhouse. Pet closures will be adjusted as conditions change.

Official announcements about projects that address the NPS Deferred Maintenance Backlog will be posted to the national seashore’s website, on the park’s Facebook page, and on Twitter at @CapeCodNPS.
