Cleanup Work at Herring Cove Beach to Affect Traffic

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. –Cape Cod National Seashore Interim Superintendent Kathy Tevyaw announces that the work to remove broken asphalt from the beach along the Herring Cove north parking lot at Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown will have a temporary impact on traffic in the area.   The site was damaged extensively this past winter, leaving huge sections of asphalt strewn along the beach. The work began Monday and will take several weeks to complete.
 
The damaged parking area is fenced off and the beach in front of the damaged parking lot is temporarily closed while the contractor is working. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be prohibited from entering the area during this timeframe. The restroom at the north end of the north parking lot is inside the construction zone and it will also be closed for the duration of the project. 
 
Bicyclists will be detoured by signage onto Province Lands Road for approximately half a mile around the construction site. Beachgoers arriving by car should exercise caution driving in this area.
 
Tevyaw said, “We realize this is the busiest time of the year and that it is an inconvenience to the public, but we were fortunate to receive this funding and have structured the contract to minimize the amount and duration of the impact. This work will be a major benefit to the future relocation of this parking lot as a long-term solution.  Also, the high day-time tides the week of July 31st will reduce the size of the beach, so it is important for visitors to heed the signage and remain outside of the work zone.”
