On Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23, Cape Cod National Seashore will host a Coast Guard Auxiliary anniversary event at the former Nauset Coast Guard Station at Coast Guard Beach in Eastham. The event is free and open to the public. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, the uniformed auxiliary component of the United States Coast Guard, was established in 1939. This year marks its 77th anniversary. In celebration, auxiliary members from Cape Cod Flotillas will be at the historic Coast Guard Station Nauset, now administered by the National Park Service. The public is invited to attend open houses from 11 AM to 3 PM on Saturday, October 22, and Sunday, October 23. Assisted by National Park Service personnel, Flotilla members will share the history of Station Nauset, as well as the various missions of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, including search and rescue operations, safety examination of vessels, and recreational boater safety instruction. Free safety literature will be available for the public. Also, at the open houses, the public can see and listen in as radio operators activate "November One Alpha," a specially designated amateur radio station commemorating the anniversary of the Auxiliary. The station will be contacting other Coast Guard units on the air during this time, along with amateur radio stations throughout the United States and around the world. |
