Cape Cod National Seashore will kick off its annual winter film festival on Sunday, January 19 with the blockbuster film, Dances with Wolves. Each winter a different theme or genre is explored, and this year’s focus is how people interact with landscapes and nature - both real and imagined. Films will show on six consecutive Sundays at 1:30 PM on the theatre-size screen at Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. Refreshments will be provided 30 minutes prior to each film. The movies are free, thanks to generous funding from Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
January 19: Dances with Wolves - The vast western landscape of the early 1800s and its people and events are showcased in this blockbuster film starring Kevin Costner. The film won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. (181 minutes)
January 26: Never Cry Wolf - Award-winning cinematography is featured in this dramatization of the true story of Farley Mowat in his struggle to survive in the harsh arctic environment while researching caribou and wolves. (106 minutes)
February 2: An Inconvenient Truth - In this Oscar-winning documentary, former vice president, Al Gore wages a personal campaign for the environment. (96 minutes)
February 9: Into the Wild - In this gripping film, a young man (played by Sean Penn) gives up everything to lead a solitary life in the Alaskan wilderness. (148 minutes)
February 16: Avatar - This highest grossing film of all time features an interstellar conflict over preservation and the mining of precious metal on the planet, Pandora. Nominated for nine Academy Awards, the film won Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Visual Effects. (162 minutes)
February 23: Wild America - Based on a true story of three brothers who grew up to become renowned animal photographers, this film chronicles their summer adventure roaming America with a camera. (102 minutes)
Movie-goers are invited to participate in the national seashore’s Into the Wild raffle. For every movie viewed, participants receive a raffle ticket, for up to six chances to win binoculars, field guides, and trail treats provided the national seashore’s gift and bookstore partner, Eastern National.
