This year marks fifty years since President John F. Kennedy signed legislation establishing Cape Cod National Seashore. As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, the park is hosting a multi-media presentation "Images and Remembrances of the National Seashore" by renowned local landscape painter Rick Fleury, along with Massachusetts Audubon senior naturalist Dennis Murley, on Saturday, October 8, at 3 PM, at Salt Pond Visitor Center Auditorium in Eastham. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Fleury is devoting his professional life to painting coastal landscapes of New England. His minimalist style of landscape is widely associated with Cape Cod and New England, and is gaining recognition nationally and internationally. He is an Artist Member of Copley Society of Art, Co/So, the oldest non-profit art association in the United States, founded in Boston in 1879. He has been a year-round artist on Cape Cod for over 14 years. During the program, he will share his views of the National Seashore as an artist's inspiration. He will be joined by Murley who will provide historical and ecological insights. A native Cape Codder, Murley has worked with Massachusetts Audubon for more than 26 years, and his efforts with whales, seals, sea turtles, osprey, and other rare and endangered species of the Outer Cape, has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine, USA Today, The Boston Globe, and on NPR. If you go: Salt Pond Visitor Center is located at the intersection of Route 6 and Nauset Road in Eastham and is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5 PM.The center includes a lobby with expansive views of Salt Pond, Nauset Marsh, and the Atlantic; a museum featuring the park's natural and cultural stories; staff to assist with trip planning, and a store with books, maps, puzzles, games, t-shirts, and 50th anniversary commemorative items. There are short films shown throughout the day. The Buttonbush and Nauset Marsh Trails, and the Nauset Bike Trail are located nearby.
