Cape Cod National Seashore headquarters in Wellfleet will be switching to a new phone system during the week of October 27, 2008. Over the weekend of November 1-2, the main headquarters number will change to: 508-771-2144. Dialing this new number will require most callers to dial a 1 prior to entering the rest of the number. Callers trying to reach park headquarters staff can access a directory by calling the new headquarters number. In addition, headquarters staff members will have individual phone numbers, so frequent callers will be able to reach them without dialing the main headquarters number. All other seashore facilities, such as ranger stations, visitor centers, and the North Atlantic Coastal Laboratory will continue to operate at their current phone numbers. The headquarters fax number will remain the same. This new phone system replaces one that was rapidly failing and was no longer supported by the manufacturer. The national seashore intends to replace its four other, aging phone systems over the next two years by expanding the headquarters phone system using Voice over IP technology (VOIP), which will allow most park locations to communicate over the computer network. This will also allow staff to transfer incoming calls from one end of the park to the other without callers having to hang up and dial a different number. -- NPS --
