Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price has announced the completion of the project to improve the Province Lands Bike Trail in Provincetown. In celebration of Cape Cod National Seashore's 50th Anniversary an official opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 11:00 AM on June 30, 2011 at Province Lands Visitor Center Amphitheater. Please join us, Congressman Bill Keating and State Representative Sarah Peake for this great event. The ceremony is open to the public. "The old bike trail was heavily damaged and needed to be repaired to protect resources and provide for a safer experience for bicyclists. The rehabilitation of the Province Lands Bike Trail is part of our continuing efforts to provide visitors the best opportunities to enjoy America's Great Outdoors," says George Price. Planning for the bike trail improvements began in 2005 and the project was completed in 2011. The project, partially funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, rehabilitated 4.5 miles of the Province Lands Bike Trail. The rehabilitation widened and resurfaced the bike trail to a width of ten feet, except in wetland areas. Workers replaced or constructed wood retaining walls and installed new signs, a center line, and other pavement markings. They planted beach grass and other native vegetation in places where sand drifts across the trail. The work was completed by Classic Site Solutions. The Province Lands Bike Trail was the first bike trail designed and constructed in a national park area. When it was dedicated in September 1967, the nation's preeminent cardiologist, Massachusetts native, and President Eisenhower's personal physician, Dr. Paul Dudley White, cut the ribbon at the trailhead in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Beech Forest entrance. ### |
