Cape Cod National Seashore and Town of Eastham Announce Nauset Light Beach Road Relocation Project

WELLFLEET, Mass. – Officials from the Town of Eastham and Cape Cod National Seashore have announced a project to relocate Nauset Light Beach Road in Eastham to maintain access for shoreline residents.
 
The southern portion of Nauset Light Beach Road in Eastham is being relocated due to advancing shoreline erosion. The project is expected to be completed late this spring. Eastham Town Administrator Jacqui Beebe announced, “Today, erosion has progressed to the point where it is close to encroaching on the road, and permanent loss of road stability is imminent. This town-owned road provides the only access to about two dozen properties in the area. The Department of Public Works will begin tree removal starting this/next week with additional work to follow as weather allows.”

For purposes of public safety and emergency access, the Town of Eastham is relocating the road westward approximately one-quarter mile next to the Three Sisters Lighthouses. The town has collaborated extensively with Cape Cod National Seashore and engaged with area residents. The national seashore has permitted the construction of the road within the seashore to ensure residents safe access to their properties. “We appreciate the cooperative effort with the Town of Eastham to sustain safe access for the property owners on Nauset Light Beach Road,” said Superintendent Carlstrom.

The 20’ wide roadway will be approximately one-quarter mile long and will connect with Cummings Lane, also known as Nauset Light Beach Road. It will be a "native stone" sand and gravel road. At some point in the future, electrical, communication, and water service line utilities will be installed within the roadway layout. A small off-road parking area for the Three Sisters Lighthouses is included as part of the project. Road grading work is expected to be completed in the spring.
