It has been 50 years since President Kennedy signed the legislation establishing Cape Cod National Seashore. George Price, Superintendent, and Richard Delaney, Chair of the Cape Cod National Seashore Advisory Commission announce a series of community Listening Tours as part of this 50th anniversary year. The listening tour schedule is as follows:

June 16 from 5PM to 7PM at Orleans Inn, Orleans

June 22 from 5PM to 7PM at Chapel in the Pines, Eastham

June 30 from 5PM to 7PM at the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies

The sessions will be open agenda with opportunities for members of the community to generally discuss their relationship with the national seashore, comment on its development since 1961, and provide comments and suggestions for the future.

The idea of a national seashore was not universally accepted when conversations were taking place with congressional staff, town officials, and park planners in the 1950s. Community relationships were built and contentious issues were resolved to bring us to where we are today. National seashore staff worked with the communities through numerous conferences and meetings to develop the 1998 General Management Plan. The advisory commission continues to be a vehicle for the six towns on the Outer/Lower Cape, Barnstable County officials, and state officials to maintain communication with the national seashore on a regular basis. Commission meetings are a way for the public to express their concerns and ask questions about national seashore issues. The listening tours will be an opportunity for community members to join the superintendent and advisory commission members to review the formation and progress of the national seashore over the past 50 years. We invite feedback on ways we can protect its nationally significant resources, provide for visitor enjoyment, and work in partnership with Cape Cod communities for the next 50 years.
