Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent George Price has announced that the Nauset Light Beach Bathhouse, Eastham, MA, will close on Friday, October 14th. Seashore staff will disassemble the facility this fall prior to the arrival of the winter storm season.

The need to remove the Nauset Light Beach Bathhouse has reached a critical point due to the acceleration of erosion of the adjacent coastal bluff. Winter storms have been particularly damaging in recent years with up to 18 feet of erosion at that location during one winter season. It is critical that we remove the facility at this time because the septic tank for the bathhouse is within 10 feet of the bluff.

The current stair access will remain open until the de-construction activity requires a closure of the area. Seashore staff is investigating alternatives to the current wooden stairs for beach access. The extreme erosion in this spot and storm action has destroyed the stairs each of the past several years. Seashore staff will also be planning for temporary facilities until project funding is made available for a more substantial replacement.

Seashore staff will also be removing sections of the parking lot closest to the bluff when the bluff is undercut by erosion.New parking configurations and circulation patterns may have to be established.

Ocean access will still be available from the other five Seashore beaches including Coast Guard Beach, Eastham, or Marconi Beach, Wellfleet, when access is no longer available at Nauset Light Beach.
