Tidepool Permits and Visitation

Important Information Before Your Visit

  • Permits Required for groups of Ten or more to visit the tidepools at Cabrillo National Monument during low tides of 0.7' and lower.

  • No Permit Needed for groups with fewer than ten people.

Steps to Obtain a Permit:

1. Download the Tidepool Permit Application Form.

2. Return the completed form to: cabr_education@nps.gov.

 

Tidepool Code of Conduct

For the safety of your group and the intertidal organisms, please review the following rules before your trip to Cabrillo National Monument. The group leader is responsible for ensuring all members know and obey these rules. There is zero tolerance for breaking any rules; violators will be expelled from the tidepool area and the monument.

  • Do not disturb or remove anything: Federal regulations protect all objects (36-CFR 2.1).
  • No scraping, probing, or prying instruments allowed.
  • No containers in the tidepools: This includes buckets or cups.
  • Adult supervision required: One adult per five children is mandatory. Chaperones must stay with children.

Safety Precautions

  • Footwear: Wear shoes with good traction; no flip-flops.
  • Watch your step: Be cautious of slippery rocks.
  • Movement: Walk, don't run or rock-hop.
  • Stay on trails: Avoid cliffs, as they are unstable and dangerous.
  • Sneaker waves: Be aware of sudden waves.
  • Tide awareness: Keep an eye on the incoming tide to avoid getting stranded.

Park Rangers and Volunteers are available during low tides to provide information, answer questions, and enforce regulations.

Vehicle Access

Access to the coastal area is only via vehicle on Cabrillo Road. Pedestrian access is not permitted due to safety concerns. Parking is limited; carpooling or bus transportation is encouraged.
