Wrentit (Chamaea fasciata)

Length 5.5-5.9" Wingspan 6.9-7.1"
Plain brownish-gray with paler, slightly streaked, pale pinkish bellies. Have a distinctive pale eye and long, erect tail.

The Wrentit is a bird that is commonly heard, but not seen – in fact, both sexes of this species sing! The male Wrentit’s song is quite distinctive and reminiscent of a ball bouncing away from you. It begins with 3 to 5 peeps which are followed by an accelerating trill as the “ball” bounces away. Females dribble the “ball” at an even pace, singing 3 to 14 peeps without the accelerating trill.
