Boston, MA – On Thursday, October 24 through Sunday, October 27, 2019, the National Parks of Boston will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The Battle of Leyte Gulf was long, complex and costly, with fighting in the air, on land and on sea. USS Cassin Young was one of more than 200 American ships that saw action in the four day battle in the Pacific Ocean. Two programs at the Charlestown Navy Yard provide the opportunity to hear about and reflect on this significant battle of World War II and the brave actions of the sailors aboard the USS Princeton and USS Cassin Young.

The Biggest Naval Battle in World History: Leyte Gulf

On the morning of October 24, 1944 Japanese Navy forces torpedoed the light carrier USS Princeton which caused the torpedoes on board to explode. Join retired National Park Service Ranger Vince Kordack and learn how the crew of the Cassin Young came to the aid of the Princeton, rescuing more than 100 sailors from the sinking ship. Thursday, October 24, 2019, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the Charlestown Navy Yard Visitor Center.

Board the USS Cassin Young and hear how the crew came to the aid of Princeton, rescuing over 100 sailors from the sinking ship! Thursday, October 24 through Sunday, October 27, 2019, 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

Open Daily through Veterans Day, Pier 1, Charlestown Navy Yard. Explore the main deck of this historic World War II destroyer from10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., or join a guided tour from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Fee tickets available aboard Cassin Young.
