National Parks of Boston and Partners Commemorate 251st Anniversary of Battle of Bunker Hill

BOSTON — From June 11-17, the National Parks of Boston and community partners will host a series of events commemorating the 251st Anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, the first major battle of the American Revolutionary War. These events are part of the national celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence and offer visitors an opportunity to connect with the people, places and events that helped shape the nation.  

"The Battle of Bunker Hill reminds us of the courage, sacrifice, and determination that shaped the American Revolution," said Superintendent Tarona Armstrong. "As our nation commemorates 250 years of independence, we invite visitors and community members to join us in reflecting on the people and events that helped forge the United States." 

Featured community-centered events include:  

• A nighttime illumination of the Bunker Hill Monument in partnership with the Bunker Hill Monument Association from June 13-17 
• The Bunker Hill Day Parade 
• A memorial flag garden of 1,500 US and UK flags 
• A community concert on the monument grounds  
• A naturalization ceremony in partnership with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services  
• A movie screening at Bunker Hill Community College 

The week of events conclude on June 17. At 3:30 p.m., the public is invited to the final commemoration on the Bunker Hill Monument grounds for the 251st remembrance ceremony. Invited speakers and special guests will describe the significance of the battle and the heroic bravery of those who defended Charlestown in 1775. The program will conclude with a wreath laying and a musket firing demonstration.  

About the Battle of Bunker Hill 

On June 17, 1775, hundreds of British soldiers and colonial troops fought and died in the first major battle of the American Revolution in Charlestown, a town just north of Boston. The battle lasted around two hours, sending shockwaves throughout the area. Although the British troops were ultimately victorious, the Battle of Bunker Hill united the thirteen colonies in the fight for American independence.  

Celebrating Our Nation’s 250th Anniversary 

The National Park Service is playing a leading role in the celebration and commemoration of the 250th anniversary of American independence. These efforts support Executive Order 14189 - Celebrating America's 250th Birthday, which calls for "a grand celebration worthy of the momentous occasion of the 250th anniversary of American Independence on July 4, 2026."  

Throughout the country, national parks will host hundreds of 250th anniversary programs, events, and exhibits, including many sites with direct connections to the formation of the country.
