Mind Your Surroundings

Boston African American National Historic Site is located in the busy downtown Boston neighborhood of Beacon Hill. We encourage all visitors to be aware of their surroundings throughout their time in Boston.

  • Be careful crossing busy streets and check for oncoming traffic.
  • Historic Beacon Hill has hills and different walking surfaces. Watch your step on narrow sidewalks, cobblestones, and other uneven surfaces.
  • Guard your valuables and lock your car.
  • "See Something, Say Something." If you see something suspicious, or if you have information that could aid an investigation, stay safe and tell us about it. Talk to any NPS employee for help in reporting suspicious activity.
  • In case of an emergency, call 911.

Recreate Responsibly

To help protect park resources and ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for everyone, please follow park rules and posted regulation.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring water.
  • Only designated service animals are allowed in public buildings. Please see the Superintendent's Compendium for more information.
  • Please dispose of your garbage or recyclables responsibly. If you cannot locate an appropriate recycling or trash bin, please take it with you when you leave.
  • To ensure safety, we limit walking tours of the Black Heritage Trail® to 15 people per Ranger.
  • Sites will close and tours will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Please visit the park website for any park alerts regarding closures or tour cancellations.

Respiratory Virus Precautions

The CDC has provided updated guidance to help lower the risk of respiratory viral illnesses, such as COVID-19, the flu, and RSV. In times when the spread of respiratory viruses are greater, visitors are encouraged to take the steps necessary to keep themselves safe and healthy including wearing masks, washing their hands, and maintaining physical distancing as appropriate.

A Few Steps to Help Ensure a Safe Visit:

  • Most importantly, if you feel sick, stay home!
  • If possible, practice physical distancing by maintaining at least six feet between yourself and others.
  • Practice good hygiene: wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (use hand sanitizer out on the trail), cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough, and avoid touching your face.
