Camping

Black Canyon National Park has two campgrounds - one on either rim. South Rim Campground has both reservable and first come, first served sites. North Rim Campground has first come, first served sites only.

East Portal Campground, within the canyon by the river, is accessed through the park but within the boundary of Curecanti National Recreation Area. Backcountry camping within the inner canyon Wilderness is also allowed, but Wilderness Use Permits are required.

Camping outside the park

Camping may be available in private campgrounds or on other public lands nearby.

Lodging and Dining

There are no restaurants or lodges in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The nearest restaurants and hotels are in Montrose, CO, or Gunnison, CO.

Western National Parks Association sells some hiking snacks in the bookstore at the South Rim Visitor Center.

Picnic Tables

Picnic areas are first come, first served areas for day use only. Pack out or properly dispose of any food waste and trash. Help protect park wildlife by not feeding animals or leaving food scraps behind. No fire grates are available at picnic areas.

  • Pulpit Rock Picnic Area: tables, restrooms across the street
  • Sunset View Picnic Area: tables, restrooms in parking lot
  • High Point Picnic Area: tables, restrooms in parking lot
  • East Portal Picnic Area: tables, restrooms in parking lot
