Camping

Black Canyon National Park has two campgrounds - one on either Rim. East Portal Campground, within the canyon by the river, is accessed through the park but within the boundary of Curecanti National Recreation Area. Backcountry camping within the inner canyon Wilderness is also allowed, but Wilderness Use Permits are required.

Camping Outside the Park

Camping may be available in private campgrounds or on other public lands nearby.

Lodging and Dining

There are no restaurants or lodges in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The nearest restaurants and hotels are in Montrose, CO, or Gunnison, CO.

Western National Parks Association sells some hiking snacks in the bookstore at the South Rim Visitor Center.

Picnic Tables

The North Rim has a picnic table in front of the ranger station. The South Rim has:

  • One picnic table on the South Rim Visitor Center porch. Restrooms are located in the visitor center parking lot. None of the tables have fire grates.
  • Four picnic tables at Pulpit Rock Overlook. Restrooms are located across the street from the overlook. None of the tables have fire grates.
  • Two picnic tables at Sunset View Overlook. Restrooms are located in the parking lot. None of the tables have fire grates.
  • Four picnic tables at High Point. Restrooms are located in the parking lot. None of the tables have fire grates.
  • Several picnic tables under the pavilion at East Portal. Restrooms are located in the parking lot. None of the tables have fire grates.
