The public is invited to participate in a session with Lynn Scarlett, Deputy Secretary, Department of the Interior, on March 21 at the Sheraton Denver West Hotel in Lakewood, Colorado. The Deputy Secretary is seeking suggestions and ideas on President Bush’s $3 billion National Park Centennial Initiative. The session will be held from 5pm until 7pm. Two sessions on the Western Slope will be held at the same time, hosted by the National Park Service at the Lyceum at the Center of Southwest Studies, Fort Lewis College in Durango and at the Doubletree Hotel in Grand Junction. Superintendent Connie Rudd will be available at the Grand Junction session for the discussion. The sessions are in a series that are being held around the country. The President’s proposal would provide significant new public and private investment during the next ten years to reinvigorate and strengthen national parks by the National Park Service’s 100th birthday in 2016. “These sessions are a great opportunity to think big and act boldly to develop a plan to prepare national parks for the future,” said National Park Service Director Mary Bomar. From the session discussions, the Interior Department and the National Park Service will identify signature projects and programs, set specific performance goals and report to the President by May 31st. The public also may comment on the National Park Centennial Challenge form March 12 through March 31 online at the following site: www.nps.gov/2016. The National Park Service for Black Canyon of the Gunnison national Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area has identified the full restoration of the train exhibit at Cimarron as the potential signature project. These nationally significant exhibits display Engine 278 and eight other cars used in the heyday of narrow gauge train transportation in the Gunnison valley and the Black Canyon. |
