East Portal Road reopens after weather related closure

MONTROSE, Colo. – East Portal Road, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, will reopen on Saturday, September 19, 2026, by 8:00 a.m. The road was closed on September 14 following forecasts of significant rainfall in the region, which increased the risk of mudslides.

East Portal Road provides access to the Crystal Dam, the Gunnison Tunnel, the East Portal Campground, and recreational opportunities within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area. The six‑mile road features a steep 16% grade and passes through forested areas burned during the 2025 South Rim Fire. Vehicles over 22 feet (6.7 meters) in length, including trailers, are prohibited.

The National Park Service encourages visitors to continue using caution when traveling in areas affected by past wildfires, particularly during periods of rainfall. Vegetation loss in burned areas can allow soil to quickly become saturated, increasing the potential for landslides.
