The general area is characterized by abundant sunshine, low humidity, wide daily and seasonal temperature ranges, considerable wind, and meager, but variable precipitation. The mean annual precipitation is 12 inches.

Yearly totals can range from 6 to 22 inches. Most snowfall occurs in the period from January through March with annual snowfalls of 2 to 3 feet. Mean annual maximum and minimum temperatures are 70 degrees F. and 37 degrees F., respectively. July is the warmest month, with hot and dry temperatures in the 90's and above, while January is the coldest month. Temperature extremes of 110 degrees F. and -27 degrees F. have been recorded.
