Falls Trail Stop 16

FT Stop 16
The Upper Falls drops approximately 80 feet

NPS Photo by Stella Carroll

After the volcano’s cone built up above the level of the water, or after the aquifer dried up, the maar eruptions changed to more typical lava flows and cinders from intermittent lava fountains. Eventually activity ceased, and lava still in the throat of the volcano slowly hardened in place. Upper Falls drops approximately 80 feet over this very resistant rock from the throat of the volcano.
