If you look closely into the quiet pools of water along Frijoles Creek you may see a flash of color as a small fish darts for cover. Non-native fish (Brook, Rainbow, and Brown Trout) were introduced into the stream early in the 20th century and their descendants still live there. Park ecologists are working to replace these non-native species with native species. The large floods may have removed many of these nonnatives. Fishing is not permitted in Frijoles Creek below Alcove House due to DDT contamination. Migratory waterfowl make random stops at the creek and at the river below especially during fall and spring migrations. Sandhill Cranes pass overhead frequently during their migratory journeys. It is often easier to discern their distinctive calls than to spot them flying far overhead.
