The drought and pine bark beetles have taken a toll on the pinon pines

Even though the plants that grow here are adapted to dry conditions periods of sustained drought can take their toll. The late 1990’s and early 2000’s were a period of extended drought. Thousands of pinon pines, weakened by drought, fell victim to an explosion in the population of native pine bark beetles. Tree-ring data shows that similar drought periods and mass die-offs within some species occurred during the prolonged period the Ancestral Pueblo people lived at Bandelier.
