Los Alamos, N.M. – Bandelier National Monument’s Tsankawi Unit will officially reopen on May 30, 2024 following a nearly fourteen-month temporary closure.

“We are pleased to officially welcome everybody back to Tsankawi,” said Superintendent Patrick Suddath. “This is a very sacred and special place to our tribal partners at the Pueblo of San Ildefonso. We hope that everyone visits respectfully and comes away with a sense of its cultural and spiritual importance.”

Tsankawi has been closed since April 2023. The closure was part of the larger interagency project to improve traffic flow and safety at the junction of New Mexico State Road 4 and East Jemez Road outside of White Rock. The Tsankawi Loop Trail was also re-routed around the ancestral pueblo site in accordance with the 2014 Tsankawi Unit Management Plan.

A soft reopening occurred on May 25, 2024. Power loss at the site a few weeks prior impacted visitor facilities. Portable restrooms were brought in to expedite the reopening date.

All regular Bandelier National Monument entrance fees apply at Tsankawi. An automated payment kiosk is located onsite. Park entrance fees are $25 per private vehicle, $20 for motorcycles, and $15 for individuals. All America the Beautiful passes are accepted, as well as the Bandelier Annual Pass.
