Biographical Note

Arno B. Cammerer was born in Arapahoe, Nebraska in 1883. He was the son of Lutheran pastor. Due to the family’s financial situation, he left high school after his junior year. He moved to Washington, DC, took the Civil Service exam, and became a clerk for the Treasury Department in 1904. Taking night classes, he finished high school and continued his education by enrolling at Georgetown University Law School where he received his Bachelor of Law degree in 1911.

In 1916 he began working at the National Commission of Fine Arts. In 1919 Cammerer, known affectionately as “Cam” in the NPS, became assistant director when Horace M. Albright became superintendent at Yellowstone National Park and assistant director for field operations. As assistant director Cammerer served as Mather's right-hand man in Washington and acted as director during Mather’s frequent absences over the next decade.

He advanced to the new rank of associate director in 1928, then succeeded Albright as director in August 1933. Under his leadership, the NPS became involved with recreational area planning and management, supervised the Civilian Conservation Corps in both national and state parks, and began to survey and record historic sites and buildings outside the National Park System. Strained relations with Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes impaired his effectiveness and health, and he stepped down after a heart attack in 1940 to become the NPS eastern regional director. He died the following year aged 57.
