Bayfield, WI – Due to increased bear activity, the temporary closure on Oak Island has been expanded to include the dock, group campsite B, and individual campsites 2 and 3 in addition to campsite 4, the Northwest Beach Trail from campsite 4 to the first trail junction, and the Oak Island camping zone. General day-use is prohibited in the campsite and trail closure areas. The dock is closed to overnight use and most day-use. However, backpackers with valid permits for Oak Island campsites can be dropped off at the dock or the open campsite for which they have a permit. The Loop Trail is closed from Site 1 to the trail intersection with the overlook trail due to impacts from the storm. The expanded closure is in effect beginning 8:00 am on September 1, 2016.

One resident bear is frequenting the area and has exhibited behavior that indicates it is not afraid of humans. Deterrence techniques are being used to encourage the bear stay away from humans and visitor use areas.

The help of visitors is needed to make sure that no food is left unattended and bear activity on Oak Island is reported immediately to Park Headquarters at 715-779-3398, ext. 122.
