The National Park Service (NPS) is pleased to announce that a new dock at East Bay on Sand Island in Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is now open for public use. The public dock at East Bay was closed due to damage caused by storms and extreme ice conditions during the winter of 2014-15. The dock was removed and replaced with the new dock located just south of the NPS cabin at East Bay. Nelson Construction of LaPointe, WI, was awarded the contract for the dock replacement. The new dock is built in an Lshape; extending 170 feet perpendicular to the shoreline and then 50 feet to the south. The dock is constructed of steel bin walls with a concrete cap, the same design used successfully at docks on Basswood and South Twin islands. This sturdy design has an estimated life span of 50 to 60 years. The National Park Service also recently relocated two individual campsites, and added two new individual campsites and one group campsite on Sand Island. This brings the total number of campsites on Sand Island to three group sites and six individual sites. Work is also progressing on a boardwalk to connect the new dock with one individual and one group campsite to make them more accessible for visitors. If you have any questions about the new facilities at Sand Island East Bay, call 715-779- 3397 ext. 1801.
