Bayfield, WI – Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, in partnership with Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, announce Peyton Martinson as the newly appointed park ranger cultural educator for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.“In her new role, Peyton will work with the park’s visitor service and education team to enhance public and staff understanding of Ojibwe culture and help integrate Ojibwe language, traditional knowledge, and Ojibwe perspectives into park operations,” said Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Superintendent Lynne Dominy. “She will continue to work with Ojibwe language programs in local schools and surrounding Tribal communities and will build bridges between Tribal communities and their homelands in and around the Apostle Islands.”
“I’ve seen Peyton in action at the School District of Bayfield educating our youth, staff, and community," said Chairwomen Nicole Boyd. "She is a great addition to the National Park Service, and she will be fantastic in her new role. She’s a driven and passionate Indigenous woman who will represent Red Cliff with pride and share the stories of the Anishinaabeg lands and people.”
“On behalf of the Red Cliff Tribal Council, I’d like to congratulate Peyton," said Vice-chair Rick Peterson. "The establishment of this position has been a collaboration between the National Park Service and the Red Cliff Band in our ongoing mission to build a bridge between the Red Cliff community and the National Park Service. The duties and responsibilities of this position will be a critical piece in achieving that goal.”
Peyton, a Red Cliff Band member, is a graduate of the Natural Resources Program at Northland College. Her studies included ecological restoration and geosciences. Peyton led a plant survey during her time at Northland which provided insight for the boardwalk placement accessing Raspberry Beach. Most recently, Peyton served as an AmeriCorps Farm-to-School Specialist at the Bayfield School. In this position, Peyton worked with a team of agricultural educators that brought students to the gitigaan (garden) to learn about local healthy wild and cultivated foods, while celebrating food sovereignty. Peyton is also consistently involved in various cultural activities, including the Tribe’s weekly Ojibwemowin language classes, Full Moon Ceremony, annual Anishinaabemowin Gabeshiwin (language camp), and youth pow wow.
