Stop 5 - The East Woods

The first shots on September 17th rang out in these woods, and for the next three hours both sides fought desparately to control this woodlot. Union Gen. Joseph Mansfield, leading the 12th Corps into battle was mortally wounded here. The tall column monument long the road was built in his memory.
