Antietam Remembered Trail

 

Introduction

What is a Battlefield Park? How does a nation commemorate and remember its history? During this walk you will discover how veterans, the military, citizens, and the National Park Service created and preserved the tangible reminders of the Battle of Antietam for over 140 years. The paved, quarter-mile trail starts and ends at the visitor center. It will take you past some significant landmarks and monuments that help tell the story of the battle and the evolution of this national park. Use the walking tour map and links below to take the hike. The first stop on the tour is the park visitor center.

  Stop 1 - The Visitor Center

  Start at the Visitor Center

• 

  Stop 2 - Lee’s Artillery Battalion

  Walk to the four cannon on display

• 

  Stop 3 - The Hagerstown Turnpike

  Lean about Monuments, tablets and waysides

• 

  Stop 4 - The Dunker Church

  Cross over the pike to the quiet place of worship

• 

  Stop 5 - The Maryland Monument

  Follow the path toward the monument dedicated to both sides

• 

  Stop 6 - New York State Monument

  Walk toward the tall monument with the eagle on top

• 

  Stop 7 - 20th New York Monument

  Continue to the last stop on the hike at the monument just outside of the visitor center
