ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia - Andersonville National Historic site is proud to offer a free award-winning educational opportunity in 2013. The Historical Interpreter Apprentice Program is a great chance for high school students interested in history, teaching, theater and community service to learn new skills and get strong work experience with a federal park while having fun.
Program participants meet at the national historic site on Saturday mornings from mid -January until early March. The dynamic Saturday sessions include tours, exploring Andersonville, guest speakers, field trips and lessons on historical events, activities and clothing. The program prepares young men and women to become youth docents for the park's Living History weekend in March. Apprentices receive individual attention from park staff and volunteers, behind-the-scenes access to the park, first-hand experience in museum operations, and free educational materials to keep, along with a few surprises. This free program is open to high school students. Applications are available from the National Prisoner of War Museum, Americus-Sumter Visitor Center and online at www.nps.gov/ande. Applications are due Friday, December 14th.
Andersonville National Historic Site is located 10 miles south of Oglethorpe, GA and 10 miles northeast of Americus, GA on Georgia Highway 49. The national park features the National Prisoner of War Museum, Andersonville National Cemetery and the site of the historic Civil War prison, Camp Sumter. Andersonville National Historic Site is the only national park within the National Park System to serve as a memorial to all American prisoners of war. Park grounds are open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the museum opening at 9:00 a.m. Admission is free.
