National Prisoner of War Museum to be closed April 16, 2012

ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia - The National Prisoner of War Museum located at Andersonville National Historic Site will be closed the morning of Monday, April 16, 2012 to allow for maintenance work. The length of the closure is anticipated to be approximately five hours. Park Superintendent Brad Bennett remarked, "We apologize for the inconvenience of the closure to our visitors, and expect to open the museum for the remainder of the day at 2:00 p.m." The park grounds, including the tour roads around the Civil War prison site and through Andersonville National Cemetery, will not be affected and will be open regular hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Andersonville National Historic Site is located 10 miles south of Oglethorpe, GA and 10 miles northeast of Americus, GA on Georgia Highway 49. The site features the National Prisoner of War Museum, Andersonville National Cemetery and the site of the historic Civil War prison, Camp Sumter. ­Andersonville National Historic Site is a unit of the National Park System and serves as a memorial to all American prisoners of war. Park grounds are open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the museum opening at 9:00 a.m. Admission is free.
