Travel the route of the Allegheny Portage Railroad with a park ranger on a four-hour van tour. This free tour is Saturday, June 15 at 1:00 p.m. and leaves from the Visitor Center. To make a required reservation, please call 814-886-6150.
The tour follows the route from the canal basins in Hollidaysburg to Johnstown. Tour participants will learn how this engineering marvel was built and operated. In many places the route will follow the exact path of the railroad. One of the highlights is the Staple Bend Tunnel. The tour will take passengers past the Skew Arch Bridge, Engine House No. 6 Exhibit Shelter, the Lemon House, and several historic culverts. This route was among the most important ones that went westward from 1834 to 1857.
