Picnic Areas

There are six picnic areas in the park: five on Mount Desert Island and one in Schoodic. Picnicking is also permitted park-wide, except in campgrounds where it is prohibited without a camping permit.

Mount Desert Island

Bear Brook – Open seasonally, 35 sites, 30 fireplaces

  • Along Park Loop Road, just beyond Sieur de Monts Spring turnoff
  • 1 accessible site and restroom

Seawall – Open year round, 14 sites, 12 fireplaces

  • Located off Route 102A, opposite the Seawall Campground entrance
  • Accessible sites and restroom

Pretty Marsh – Open seasonally, 11 sites, 8 fireplaces

  • Located off Route 102 between Somesville and Seal Cove
  • Accessible sites and restroom
  • Only picnic area with covered picnic table

Thompson Island – Open seasonally, 46 sites, 44 fireplaces

  • Located off Route 3 (southbound) just before crossing over onto Mount Desert Island
  • 1 accessible site and restroom

Fabbri – Open year round, 23 sites and fireplaces

  • Located past Otter Point on Park Loop Road
  • Accessible sites and restroom

Schoodic Peninsula

Frazer Point – Open year round, 26 sites, 22 fireplaces

  • Located off Route 186 on Schoodic Peninsula
  • 1 accessible site and restroom
 
 

Picnicking Rules & Regulations

  • The park’s picnic areas are first-come, first-serve and cannot be reserved.
  • Picnicking is prohibited in campgrounds without a camping permit and only registered campers can picnic in the park’s campgrounds.
  • Contained charcoal and wood fires are allowed only in campgrounds and in designated picnic areas within park-provided receptacles or in private grills. Fires must be contained within the grills provided or within private grills where no ground scorching occurs.
  • The use of personal gas grills and stoves are permitted.
  • Any organized groups of over 30 people need a permit (this includes school groups) to picnic at any of the park’s picnic areas. See Special Use Permits for details.

Restaurants

The only dining facility in the park, the Jordan Pond House Restaurant serves lunch, tea, and dinner (mid-May through late October).
Many dining options are available in nearby communities.
