Since 1992, Acadia National Park has repaired the steps and railings at Thunder Hole five times. The masonry mortar from which the steps were constructed was easily shaken apart by the ocean waves and the vibration caused by the extremely powerful ocean water, causing the loosened stones to fall into the ocean. For the last six weeks, Thunder Hole has been closed and the stone veneer walls have been replaced with high strength, salt resistant concrete. All of the Thunder Hole area is open now.
