In the next three weeks, Acadia National Park firefighters and rangers plan to conduct prescribed burns at Jordan Pond, Seawall Field, Ship Harbor Trailhead field, the Fire of '47 Overlook, Baker Island and the Oak Overlook by Duck Brook Bridge. The purpose of the prescribed burns is to continue to remove accumulated fuels build up and to reduce tree encroachment into cultural landscapes. Woody stems from softwoods, hardwood regeneration, and brush have begun to encroach on the fields and scenic vistas. The projects are part of an ongoing program to maintain Acadia's cultural landscapes and vistas. Additionally, viewsheds near Ship Harbor and Seawall will be thinned over the next few weeks.
