The National Park Service (NPS) is holding two public meetings in July to gather input on the transportation plan and environmental impact statement for Acadia National Park.The public meetings will be held on July 29 from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Mount Desert Island High School (1081 Eagle Lake Road/ME 233) in Bar Harbor, and July 30 from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Peninsula School (71 Main Street/ME 186) in Prospect Harbor. The purpose of the transportation plan is to determine ways to provide safe and efficient transportation for visitors while ensuring the protection of park resources and values. The NPS is holding public meetings to get feedback on issues related to traffic, parking, and all modes of transportation in the park. Transportation issues at Acadia National Park are diverse and complex. Visitors travel to and within the park by private vehicle, tour bus, bicycle, ferry, Island Explorer bus, and other modes. A park-wide transportation plan is needed to determine ways to improve safety, reduce congestion and crowding, avoid impacts to park resources, and provide visitors with a high-quality experience.Using input from the public and ongoing social science research, the NPS will identify a range of transportation and visitor use management strategies to help ensure the protection of park resources and values. "We heard many thoughtful ideas about the future of transportation at Acadia at the first two public meetings in June and looking forward to getting additional feedback from those who were not able to attend the earlier meetings," Superintendent Sheridan Steele said.
