In the fall of 2006, there was a series of earthquakes on Mount Desert Island that caused extensive rockslides on the Precipice Trail and East Face Trail on Champlain Mt. and on the Homans Path on Dorr Mt., resulting in the closure of those trails. Park trail crews recently completed removing rock resulting from those slides from the Homans Path and it has been reopened. Damaged stone staircases have been rehabilitated in a manner consistent with extant work on the Path. The two other trails remain closed. Park crews working on the Precipice Trail expect opening within the next three to four weeks. Crews also continue work on the East Face Champlain Trail, though it will remain closed until the summer of 2008. Feel free to contact the trail crew at their office on McFarland Hill or call 288-8760 for more information. |
